Questions and Answers for a Tesco Interview

Please tell us about yourself.

Discuss your interests, previous work experience, and education. Maintain a brief and to-the-point explanation.  What is most important is your previous work experience. You will be ahead of the competition if you have relevant work experience.

Could you please tell us about your previous work experience?

If possible, try to discuss how your previous work experience relates to the Tesco job you’re applying for.   If this is your first job, you have been focused on school and are now eager to prove yourself in the workplace.

Can you tell us anything about Tesco?

This question is asked by interviewers to weed out applicants who are hoping to get an interview by applying to hundreds of jobs at random. They prefer to meet with applicants who have done their homework on the company. Here are some Tesco facts.

About

Tesco is one of the world’s largest retailers.
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen.
Tesco is best known for its grocery and fresh food.
Tesco is also well-known for its clothing, online shopping, insurance, gas stations, and mobile pay as you go services.

Who are Tesco’s rivals

Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, ASDA, and Morrisons are its competitors.

What motivates you to work for us?

State that you enjoy the product and service at Tesco and would be delighted to represent them.   Assume you would be proud to work for a company that is so committed to reducing food waste (their food waste is less than 1%).

Mention how much you appreciate Tesco’s promotion of healthier living for their customers. Tesco, for example, was the first retailer in the UK to offer free fruit to children in their stores. Tesco has also removed sweets and chocolates from all of its checkouts.

What is your strongest suit?

I am a quick study (this is a great answer because they will have to spend less time training you)  I work well under pressure (this is an excellent response because all Tesco’s will be extremely busy and you will need to remain focused during this time).

What is your greatest flaw?

You should not deny having a weakness or describe your strengths as a weakness (I am a perfectionist, or I work too hard and neglect my friends and family). Mention a weakness that is required for the role but is not a deal breaker if you lack it.

When you describe your weakness, make sure to include what you’re doing to overcome it. For example, I am afraid of public speaking and have enrolled in a public speaking class to help me overcome this fear.

How would you handle an irate customer?

I would investigate the customer’s complaint. I would offer to replace it if it was the product (mention you would check with your manager first). It is critical to keep the customer happy because an unhappy customer will never return.

If a customer was upset because they couldn’t find a product, I would go out of my way to find it for them rather than just pointing them in the right direction.

Take a look at Tesco’s return policy, which you can use to answer this question. For example, if a customer tries to return an item of clothing, you can check the return policy to see if they can still return it.

In five years, where do you see yourself?

Tesco is a massive corporation with numerous opportunities for expansion. Take a look at Tesco’s career website and see what you can see yourself doing in five years.

It’s fine if you don’t want to work at Tesco in five years; however, not having any long-term goals will make you appear unmotivated. I recommend that you take a few minutes to look for a job that is a good fit for you. Retail management, information technology, marketing, and accounting are all possibilities.

Why I should hire you

Examine the job description for the skills they seek and restate those skills. Tesco will most likely look for communication skills, motivation, punctuality, and the ability to learn quickly.

How did you come across this job?

If possible, state that you have been actively looking for jobs on Tesco’s website because you believe it would be a fun and fast-paced place to work.  Please include the name of anyone you know who works there (assuming they will give you a good reference).

What questions should I ask during a Tesco interview

No Tesco Interview Questions list would be complete without asking the question, “Do you have any questions for us?” Here are some questions you might want to ask.   What do you enjoy most about your job?

What adjectives would you use to describe your ideal candidate for this position? What is the most important aspect of this position?  How would you define my success, and what could I do to meet your standards?

Which aspect of the job has the most difficult learning curve? What can I do to quickly get up to speed? What opportunities will there be for me to learn and grow?
